<p>Toast creates technology to help restaurants and local businesses succeed in a digital world, helping business owners operate, increase sales, engage customers, and keep employees happy.</p> <p>We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help build and scale Toast’s labor cost and timekeeping platforms - systems that directly influence labor spend for more than 166,000 restaurant locations. You’ll work on highly visible, mission-critical infrastructure supporting millions of employees and operators across Toast restaurants.</p> <p>In this role, you’ll gain hands-on experience with large-scale, data-intensive systems. We’ve processed over a <em>billion</em> shift records and are in the midst of an exciting architecture modernization to support rapid growth and faster development. We are operating at true scale, pushing the limits of our databases. If you’re excited to lay the technical foundation for the next generation of labor cost management—and to help restaurant operators save real money—we’d love to hear from you.</p> <p><strong>A day in the life (Responsibilities):</strong></p> <ul> <li>Drive the evolution of our next-generation timekeeping platform, operating at significant scale and processing tens of millions of shift events each week</li> <li>Build, run, and improve core backend systems alongside a collaborative, supportive team.</li> <li>Take end-to-end ownership of systems, contributing to a strong engineering culture focused on quality, reliability, and long-term maintainability</li> <li>Lead work across the full development lifecycle—design, estimation, implementation, testing, debugging, and deployment—while learning and applying best practices for building and operating reliable systems at scale.</li> <li>Ship code that directly impacts Toast’s growth and the day-to-day operations of restaurant teams</li> <li>Partner with product and design to influence what we build and how we build it</li> <li>Contribute to and elevate team standards through thoughtful code reviews and technical discussions</li> <li>Mentor and provide technical guidance to other team members</li> </ul> <p><strong>What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)</strong></p> <ul> <li>5+ years of back-end experience with one or more object-oriented programming languages (such as Java, Kotlin, or similar).</li> <li>Experience owning and operating production systems.</li> <li>A track record of tackling ambiguous, high-impact challenges and delivering scalable solutions</li> <li>Ability and motivation to learn quickly and apply knowledge to solve real problems</li> <li>A hunger to take on challenging projects and build systems that operate at massive scale.</li> </ul> <p>Above all, we’r
